Training Description:
The Motivational Interviewing approach has been researched extensively in diverse settings, including primary care, mental health, addictions, education, and facilities under the Department of Corrections. Continuously evolving MI strategies have necessitated ongoing education for all types of healthcare workers.
This 3-hour online introductory training is designed to help a variety of behavioral health professionals interested in learning the basic MI principles to translate that knowledge into practice. The training will review the four processes, spirit of MI, patient-centered communications skills, change and sustain talk, and approaches to people who are “resistant” to change.
Training Objectives:
After participating in this training, participants will be able to:
- Explain a rationale for the use of motivational interviewing and appreciate its spirit
- Describe the four processes and four skills of motivational interviewing
- Describe common scenarios in which motivational interviewing is appropriate and where it is not
- Use one Motivational Interviewing skill and give/receive feedback
