Integrating Solution Focused Therapy into Your Clinical Practice

January 18 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm EST

Event Series Event Series (See All)

This is a two-day, live, in-person training, and attendance on both days is required.

Training Description:

Actively participate in two days of live, in-person training in Shrewsbury, MA conducted by Susan Tohn! Solution Focused work is ideal for these challenging times as the model meets the client’s needs in fewer sessions than traditional models and is applicable to a culturally diverse clientele. The techniques employed are non-judgmental and adhere to the “meet the client where they are” philosophy. Although not necessary, doing Solution Focused work is most exciting when using a “team” approach. Solution Focused Therapy focuses on “change talk” not “problem talk” and is applicable to both the micro and macro levels of working with individuals, families, groups, managed behavioral healthcare organizations, and other organizations. Solution Focused therapy assumes people have their own resources and empowers them to create and realize their own solutions. The model emphasizes strong rapport and active participation by both client and therapist.

Training Objectives:

After completing this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the assumptions and philosophy of Solution Focused Therapy
  2. Explain the origin of the model, negotiating and setting well-formed goals
  3. Describe the 3 possible triadic relationships between clients, goals, and clinicians.
  4. Demonstrate goal setting using “the miracle question”, exploring exceptions, and measuring client progress and satisfaction.
  5. Demonstrate the 4 different types of scales used in a first session.
  6. Explain how to integrate Solution Focused work into their existing practices.
  7. Explain how to apply the Solution Focused Therapy model to working with a variety of client populations.
  8. Explain how to develop tasks for clients, including single and multiple tasks
  9. Demonstrate the EARS technique
  10. Explain how to integrate the Solution Focused Model into their specific clinical settings for long-term and short-term clinical treatment
  11. Explain specific techniques including goal maintenance, helping stuck clients move forward, working with competing referral systems, working with specific populations, determining when to terminate

Lunch and Ms. Tohn’s book will be provided. The training will be followed up by 1-hour consultation sessions every 4-6 weeks throughout 2024 up to 12 sessions. Space is limited to 2 clinicians per CBHC. Contact your Program Quality Manager (PQM) by December 22, 2023, if interested.
