Description:

This 3-hour live training for clinical supervisors reviews the impact of working with clients with beliefs and experiences different than ours and the impact that can have on both the client’s experience and the practitioner’s experience. The training content will assist supervisors in helping their supervisees identify areas of countertransference of both the “halo” and the “horn” type as well as the countertransference that can be evoked by the stage of change the client is in for the therapeutic goals of the behavioral health focus. Supervisory actions and fostering self-awareness and skill development in staff will be a primary focus.

Objectives:

After completing this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the difference between bias, countertransference, direct trauma and vicarious trauma in the supervisee and how to assist the individual with each
  2. Assess the continuum of compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and burnout and responses to each by the supervisee in their work with the client
  3. Discuss how bias and vicarious trauma can impact countertransference and work with clients: “What Rooms Shouldn’t I Be In”
  4. Discuss how supervisors, teams, and the facility can assist in supporting staff in this highly challenging work
